Why Your Article Marketing Is Failing And What To Do About It

January 8, 2014 By Ron Leave a Comment

If you are not seeing the results with your article marketing that everyone talks about online then maybe you should read this post, it is what I did, how i got hurt and what I did to fix it.

As an avid believer in article marketing and guest posting to increase your websites influence and ranking across all the major search engines one thing has frustrated me to no end. What I have found is this, the lack of attention that is paid to those articles being placed on other sites.

Understanding What You Want To Achieve

Why Your Article Marketing Is FailingI’m not sure if it’s just ignorance on our behalf or just the assumption that website owners where the articles are located will do all the work for us. I am here to tell you this, they wont, and you need to start thinking a little harder when writing articles and placing them on other people’s sites including any article directories or Web 2.0 properties you manage.

If you want to get exposure for those articles then you are going to have to do the work you self, yes webmaster do want high quality content on their sites but they do very little in the way of helping that content rank.

Going Back In Time

First let’s take a step back to 2006 and have a look at what was working then, and then I will back into 2014 and show you what you need to be doing now to see success with article marketing.

2006 Was So Easy, It Was Actually Laughable

When I first started doing article marketing as a way to build my sites up in the search engines it was dead easy, there were countless article directories where you could submit your articles attach your links and see results almost over night depending on the age and authority of your site and of course the popularity of the article.

It became that easy that just about every SEO company on the planet jumped on board offering this as a service. I had even joined three article submission sites and was paying others to write and submit articles on my behalf. All my sites were skyrocketing in the search engines and I was making a very tidy profit to boot.

I’m sure that many of you reading this post right now experienced the same kind of results, that is until early 2012 when everything came crashing down around my ears and probably yours. What I had neglected to do was build any links to those links which meant I now had thousands of links pointing to my sites that were of little or no benefit. In fact I got smashed by Google when Penguin went live which took around 80% of my search traffic over night.

Any links that you have built via guest posts or article directories place that link into Moz Quick Links to see how many sites are pointing to that page. Then check out the site to see how many internal links are pointing at your article or even if you have added any internal links to that article. I believe these are all indicators to Google right now and if you can, you need to correct them as soon as you can.

Just have a look at any guest post on a site they are easy to spot as they usually only have one or two links to external sources and nothing else, if I can identify them you can bet you bottom dollar that Google can.

Back To 2014 The Future Of Your Marketing Efforts

First rule of thumb you need to follow starting today is this, forget about re-writers they are very time-consuming and usually produce substandard articles. I should know I did it for more than five years and they are just to hard to manage now.

The goal you should have in mind is building relationships first and foremost and you can only effectively achieve this by producing high quality articles. There is really no exception to this rule.

So What Process Do I Use

Over the past few months I changed everything I did with article marketing and guest posting. Firstly before contacting any webmasters for guest posts I will write a series of 10 posts all focused around a topic on my site, you can do more but that is a number I am using for this example there is really no limit.

article processThen I will find sites that are related to that content and also have a look to see what other similar content they have on their site. The reason I look for the content on the site i want to add the guest post to is because I want to add internal links to the article.

Once I find the sites I need and then work out what I am going to be linking to internally I create a spreadsheet or just add all the sites and links I am adding to notepad for later reference. By doing this I can see how it is all going to look before it all goes live. No matter where you add the information make sure it is safe and secure you will need this to keep track of everything you are doing.

Just a quick note: These can also be article directories or Web 2.0 properties they don’t have to be sites for guest posting only, in fact the more diverse the better I even encourage some links to be nofollow.

If you want to learn how I interlink this all together please leave you comments below. I just noticed how long this article was getting and decided to break into smaller parts. If I get an interest in this I will add the strategy I’m using right now to bring my sites back from the brink.

If not I will keep it all to myself. And no there is nothing to buy and definitely no affiliate links to click, this is me sharing with you.

What I have found out in the last few months is this, it’s not the amount of back links you get but the quality and this system will ensure you never have a bad link pointing to your site again and hopefully making you animal proof from Google now and into the future.

For anyone that has used the UAW network then you may want to read this post on how to remove some of the links.
