Common Myths About Affiliate Marketing

January 23, 2014 By Ron Leave a Comment

Affiliate marketing is a popular and effective way for companies to promote themselves online.

Common Myths About Affiliate MarketingIn case you haven’t heard the term before, this is a partnership between two or more companies; one of which is the client and the other of which is the affiliate.

The affiliate gets paid to bring traffic and sales to the client’s website. In other words, both parties benefit from the partnership.

Affiliate marketing is useful and lucrative; however, there are a number of misconceptions about the practice. Some think it’s too good to be true, while others are under the impression that affiliate marketing is more of a fad. Here are a few of the most common myths about affiliate marketing.

It’s Too Hard

Many assume that affiliate marketing is difficult to understand, let alone put into practice. In fact, the opposite is true. You don’t even have to be qualified as a marketer to get the most out of a campaign. You can learn affiliate marketing pretty quickly. There are many websites, training sessions and other resources you can use to learn about affiliate marketing. If you want to get started right away you can even learn as you go.

It’s Not Profitable

This myth is a little strange, but it exists nonetheless. After all, why would companies use this form of marketing if it didn’t make money? It’s not a get rich quick scheme, but it will be worth your while in the long run. You do have to pay the affiliate for the program you choose, but many find their results make up for the cost many times over.

It Won’t Last

Some worry that since affiliate marketing is still relatively new, it’s more of a fad and won’t be around much longer. Skeptics say that Google’s algorithm is always changing, which is true. Google and other search engines are putting much more focus on quality content than links and other elements. You may want to read this post on the seven deadly sins that many make when starting an online business.

However, there is no reason to suspect that affiliate marketing will not adapt to these changes — in fact, it already has. With every new algorithm or update, affiliates tweak their approach. Affiliate marketing continues to be a successful approach, in spite of ongoing chances to search engines.

Customers Don’t Like It

Some people also suspect that affiliate marketing will eventually die out because customers do not like it. Sure, affiliate marketing is much more effective than traditional advertising, but does it really give customers something they want? Wouldn’t they rather go straight to Amazon or eBay instead of investigating Pay-Per-Click leads?

Marketers have found this kind of logic to be faulty. Users don’t want to buy everything on a handful of sites, they want to shop around and get the best price. Consumers are always on the lookout for a steeper discount and that’s why affiliate marketing will be around for the foreseeable future.

It Is Too Late to Get Started

Some worry that because affiliate marketing has already taken off, all the good niche markets have been taken. They feel like it is too late for them to gain a foothold in the market. In reality, the internet is huge and it’s silly to think you can’t profit from affiliate marketing just because others found it first.

If you truly believe your niche is too overcrowded, you can always move to a slightly different area. You don’t even need to have a single niche. Selecting a broader area or a group of smaller niches is often an effective approach. For example, if your first choice was industrial refrigerators, you could also look into home cooling appliances or even refrigerated trucks for sale.

As you can see, there are a lot of rumors about affiliate marketing out there you just have to read this post, but many have little basis in truth. If you haven’t already used affiliate marketing, get started on a campaign today!
