Tips On Buying A Domain Name

March 22, 2010 By Ron 5 Comments

Buying a domain name is not hard to do, however there are some things you should know before you spend any money with a registrar as this transaction is non refundable.

domain nameThey are many people in search to buy domains for a variety of reasons. These are such things as establishing your own internet business, starting a personal website or blog or even starting your affiliate marketing business.

If you are thinking about buying a domain for business purposes such as affiliate marketing, then it’s especially important to decide on the right domain name as well as a reliable and affordable domain registrar.

Doing a thorough evaluation of one’s internet business BEFORE buying a domain name is crucial.

When considering a domain name, one must first think about what is being promoted and then base the domain name on it. Regardless of your online business you should first use Google’s keyword tool to give you some idea of what domain name to choose. The reason for this is simple, you need to have at least one of your main keywords in the domain of your site.

One thing not to do is buy the domain name first and then later think about what will be promoted on the site.

Knowing Your Online Business Objective Will Help With Your Domain Name Selection

Your initial research in buying a domain name should involve the compilation of the following types of information: company name, products or services that you will be selling, what is the targeted web traffic and the type of online marketing that is going to be used to promote the site.

You really need to have a full understanding of your online business and what its purpose actually is, by doing this it will be a big help in narrowing down the selection of keywords needed in the domain that is the most suitable for drawing in potential customers.

Choosing The Right Keyword Rich Domain Name Will Bring More Targeted Traffic

Another one of the key objectives of selecting an effective domain name is ensuring that this name will help in targeting web traffic, leading to a consistent growth in potential customers and eventually an increase in online sales and profits.

An effective domain name should be short, simple and reflect the nature of the online business or at least the contents that will eventually be published on the website.

Things You Should Avoid With Your Domain Name

Avoiding things like acronyms (unless they are commonly used acronyms), initials, dashes or other symbols is highly recommended. These can confuse potential customers and make it difficult for them to remember the domain name. This is an obvious disadvantage when the objective is to get people to visit the site time and time again.

Selecting a credible domain registrar is the next important step to take in order to buy your domain names

A reliable domain name registrar will ensure a high standard of security as well as any additional customer service that may be required even after the domains have been purchased. The registrar will be able to assist in checking on the availability of the particular domain name or names that have been chosen by you.

When you submit the request and find that the selected domain is available, the domain registrar will then require you to submit your personal or business contact information like your full name, email address, mailing address, as well as any other significant information necessary.

As is the case with buying anything whether it is online or off, it’s very important for online business owners to take the time to shop around for a domain registrar that you will be comfortable working with. There are a number of them out there, so this should not be too difficult to do.

Selecting a credible registrar will save a lot of trouble as well as provide a smooth, simple and easy procedure when proceeding to buy a domain or domains for your online business or personal website.

Once a suitable domain name (or names) has been decided upon that is best suited for your online business purposes. And you really only want to be looking at .com as the preferred extension but you can also go to the .net and definitely steer clear of any other extensions if this is going to be a business.

The next step in buying a domain name is to proceed to the domain registrar you have selected to purchase the domain name unless of course it turns out that that specific (.com) domain name has already been registered by somebody else, and there is a very high chance of this happening.

If this happens do not give up try different combination’s of the chosen keywords and even try the .net extension.

You might also consider looking specifically at your own country extension when buying a domain name you want, if this is suitable for your business model.

Or if the domain is registered but is only parked you could contact the owner of the domain name and make an offer to purchase it directly from them.

Great tips, I do agree that domain purchase should be one of the highest considerations as it can either make it or break it for you.

      Hi Alex…

Yes it is possibly the most important factor when starting your own online business but many people put no thought into it and then as you said find it very hard to make any progress online.

One of the biggest challenges when choosing a domain name is that most of the one’s you come up with are already taken. Especially with dot coms so many of them are parked. Still good tips though.

    Great pointers!

Your domain name is your brand … the name your business will be known for. Come up with one that you’re pretty sure you won’t regret later on, and one which can help attract potential clients to your site.

Hi Jason And Welcome to our site…

Yes you are right on the money with that.. To many people rush out and register a domain name only to find months down the track it just does not suit their business model or products.

Put a little thought into you name and it will be branded across the internet, as well as getting good rankings in the search engines if you have used your keywords wisely and effectively in the domain name.
