Make More Sales By Going Broad And Deep In Your Keyword Research

One of the biggest ingredients to success as an affiliate marketer is the quality of your keywords. This isn’t earth shattering news, of course.

However, it amazes me that, despite their supreme importance, how many affiliates still barely spend any real-time and effort into researching the best internet keywords.

Broad And Deep Keyword ResearchIn fact, the majority of affiliates simply look for the most searched keywords – that is, the highest demand ones – for their niche and then run their PPC campaigns, do their article marketing, or their SEO, catered to this list.

Then they scratch their heads when the sales don’t come in or they lose money. For starters, in lucrative niches, the highest demand keywords are also the ones with the most competition. They’re the keywords every other affiliate out there in the same niche is gunning for, too.

If you do what everyone else is doing, I assure you, you will get mediocre results at best.

One of the best tips I can give you — and this came from hard-knocks, real-world experience — is to go after keywords that there is very little demand for. It seems counter intuitive, I know.

However, Let Me Make My Case For Keyword Research…

Unlike the most searched keywords in your niche, the ones that have very little demand tend to have very little competition, so it’s much easier to get high rankings for them. Another bonus is they also tend to be more highly targeted, meaning the traffic you pull to them will also convert better into sales!

Why, then, do most affiliates ignore these types of internet keywords? Because most affiliates think it’s not worth their time and effort to even create content optimized for them.

They think “Why bother with keyword research? They only get a few searches per day.”

What these marketers are missing is that if you create content that caters to enough of these small demand, but highly targeted keywords, your collective traffic from them will swell to significant levels, and the sales will follow.

For the first couple of years of my online career, I, too, achieved modest results because I spent a great deal of time and energy chasing the chimera of the most competitive keywords, and dreaming of all the money I would make once I achieved top rankings for the most searched keywords in the niches I was targeting.

Then, when the day happened that I did in fact achieve very high rankings for some of those much sought after keywords, I noticed that the traffic from them just didn’t bring in the conversions and sales to the degree I thought they would.

When I finally developed enough sense to start testing the small demand, highly focused keywords and do it persistently, I was pleasantly surprised at the results.

So, if you are, for example, promoting a product that helps alleviate depression, you don’t want to target “depression” or “depression treatments” or “depression symptoms.”

You want to go deeper and target phrases like “natural remedy for depression and anxiety,” “herbal remedies for depression.”

The second best tip I can give you with your internet keyword research is to go broad.

Too many people focus on only the base keyword of their niche and never realize that lateral keywords may have even higher relevancy and convert just as well into sales, if not better.

For example, most affiliates in the depression market would just target keywords with the root word depression in it, completely ignoring potentially good keywords with the words “brain” or “mind” in the root.

To give you another concrete example, I’m personally involved in the fish oil market, and because many people take fish oils for their omega 3 fatty acid content, I also target the omega 3 based keywords.

Because fish oils are good for heart disease and heart health I also target these keywords, too. And because fish oils are good for fetal and infant development, I also target keywords dealing with healthy pregnancy and nutrition.

Do you see where I’m going with this? By going broad and then digging deep into those lateral categories, I open up entirely new horizons of targeted keywords that help me rake in the sales.

Think how you can go broad and deep, too, in your niche to mine it for massive targeted traffic and sales and let the rest of affiliates fight for table scraps.

      You are sort of right when you talk about using keywords in your text where you need to keep a good density so it does not start to be flagged as spam..

      However if you really want to increase your web sales with keywords then you need to look at what links are coming into your website and what keywords are being used in those links.       Yes the keywords are very important for not only the page optimization but also with how you brand your site online and even to the extent of what anchor keyword text is being used to link to your site.

    My brief experience tells me that Keyword is paramount, I made some similar mistakes on day one and have paid the price. There is a certain knack of incorporating keywords in the article, especially the long tail that makes the article smooth to read and also attractive to the search engine. Slowly I am catching on as to how to develop and use the lateral words….. not always easy.
