Understanding The Facebook Features

July 29, 2010 By Ron Leave a Comment

To conduct business on Facebook, a good grasp and understanding of the Facebook features and terminologies is paramount.

This helps you know how to navigate and conduct yourself around the Facebook business platform.

Below are some of the common features and the explanations

Profile

A profile refers to your personal page. It contains personally identifiable information that is visible to specified users. The profile contains sections for Photos, Friends, Notes, Status and a Wall. Each of these has its use.

Page

A page is the customizable presence on Facebook for a business, organization, brand or public personality. It is for promotion and publicity purposes and also serves as an interaction forum between a business and its clientele.

Users can sign up on a page and become (page) fans. Regular communication may then be established.

Facebook Wall

Groups

Groups on Facebook refer to a community or congregation of people who come together on common ground. They are a podium for members who share similar interests to interact and exchange views. Anyone can form a group or join one – provided they satisfy the criterion for membership.

Group members can exchange emails and post photos, videos or links.

News Feed

This is a communications feature on Facebook for notifying and updating members on their friends’ activity or status at any one time.

It gives notifications on profile changes, upcoming events, conversations, birthdays, etc. News Feed can be described as the messenger and alert service for Facebook.

Applications

Facebook provides a platform for program developers to create social applications that enhance communication and user experience on Facebook. Developers can create applications based on a user’s requirements or needs.

Examples of applications on Facebook include ‘FaceBank’ – for tracking debts and expenses among friends, ‘Lickuacious’ –  for ranking friends on the basis of wall popularity, and ‘Gifts’ – for sending virtual presents.

Events

Facebook events is a feature used for planning, liaising and organizing for social events among friends or group members. Events such as birthdays, product launches or sales promotions are communicated across friends’ pages using the events feature. It is a popular feature that acts as a calendar for bookmarking and planning social events.

The Wall

A wall on Facebook is a place where users can write or post messages. The messages are visible to everyone with access to the user’s profile. A user can also see their friends’ wall posts. Users can write on each others’ walls. Photos and videos can be attached to wall posts.

Face Book Notes

Facebook Notes

This feature allows users to write blogs or import and syndicate blogs into their Facebook accounts. Notes are displayed on a user’s profile and are visible to their friends.

Notes may contain attached photos. Blogs and photos tagged with usernames become visible to those users via News Feed.

Pokes

These are virtual ‘nudges’. They are used to catch or request for attention from friends or potential associates. Poke requests may be accepted or declined.

The Marketplace

This is the classified ads section on Facebook. This allows users to post ads under defined categories such as Jobs, Sales/Purchases, Housing, etc. It’s free to post ads or access the marketplace.
