Affiliate Marketing Pitfalls Your Affiliate Survival Guide

August 21, 2009 By Ron Leave a Comment

Being an affiliate marketer myself and having more than twelve years experience there are a few traps that I fell into in the early days which I would now like to share with you. I do this in the hope that it will save you countless hours of lost time, money and frustration.

What You Need To Know

For some out there it could even save your online business.

As you are already very aware that affiliate marketing can be a very powerful tool to making lots money if it is done correctly and patiently, but there are a few traps that you should avoid at all costs if you want to experience the full benefits of marketing online.

How To Promote Hot In Demand Products

affiliate marketing pitfallsOne area where this is constantly happening is Clickbank where a product is promoted heavily in a pre-launch email campaign across the internet to the extent that everyone online is shooting out emails and talking about it in forums and blogs.

It is said that this is where the big money is in promoting these hot in demand products, but is it the right product for you and your affiliate business?

Participating in these affiliate launches myself I have discover a few things that you need to be aware of, firstly you are going up against some real heavy weights in the affiliate business and secondly many of these products have a very limited self life for making you a residual income.

I am not saying don’t do this when it comes to getting involved but I will suggest what you do is wait until you have a strong site to launch your campaigns from and have the credibility and trust of your subscribers and website visitors.

Read our post to understand more about How To Become Trustworthy Online.

Don’t Join Every Affiliate Program You Find First Up

Another huge problem for many affiliates is when they sign up for too many affiliate networks or try to promote too many products at once.

Yes, it’s your goal to have multiple streams of income but you need to build this up slowly over time, for example how many promotions can you do in a day what are your subscribers going to do if you are bombarding them with three or four different offers everyday, “UNSUBSCRIBE”.

It really becomes extremely difficult to focus your efforts in to many different areas at once, pick three or four good solid programs and start with them and definitely make sure they are relevant to your website so you can gain trust as an affiliate and expert.

Some might even say that promoting 4 products is too many to start with, and they are probably right. What you need to do with those four affiliate programs (Not Networks) you have selected is test and see which is going to convert for your site and drop the ones that don’t.

However when I say drop the program it’s not removing the page from your site you should then use the leverage of that page to send further links to the page of your site that is making the money after all if you have marketed the page correctly with bookmarking, twitter and one way back links and numerous other tactics why not get the benefit that can potentially make you money.

Make Sure You Know The Product You Are Promoting

This is a mistake that many affiliates make and that is not being knowledgeable about the product or service they are promoting. So what happens here is that the page copy you have spent hours writing can not relay the message and when the visitor actually goes to the site they see something totally different with the end result of you losing a sale. Make sure you spend the time to get first-hand knowledge about the product or service.

A very effective way to find out if a product or service is good or bad is to buy the product yourself before you join the affiliate program and promote it. This tactic gives you complete insight into the product or service before you actually recommend it to your website visitors or promote it to your list. If you don’t purchase the product at least take the time to follow the payment process and how long it took you to get there.

There are some products currently being promoted that we looked at which are MyClickBank Business, The CB-Code (no longer available) and ClickBank Profit System (no longer available) which have changed the sign up process and even the marketing of their products dramatically. We will not go into details today but you should check them out to see how they have constructed their sales funnel to convert sales.

Also make it a point to understand the return policy and what level of customer service is available. If you are not happy with what you are seeing then you could guarantee that your website visitors and subscribers will be feeling the same way so would you want to referring “YOUR” valuable customers to that site.

Getting Good Resources From The Vendor To Promote The Product Or Service

Another area that can let an affiliate down is not having a good relationship with the vendor and the affiliate marketer. If you’re not being supplied with material for your marketing campaigns such as banners, email and PLR Content or worst still not having your questions answered in a prompt manner and in-depth these should all be warning signs of what your customers could expect if they purchased this product.

These are just a few pointers to help not make the same affiliate marketing mistakes that I did and to start you on your way as an affiliate but if you truly wish to be a success online then it comes from being passionate about a product or service you are going to be promoting.

By having a passion about a product you will create an energy and drive in your sales copy, article writing and promotions and this is what any of your potential customers will pick up on.
