Social Networking Can Have Damaging Consequences

December 23, 2009 By Ron 2 Comments

As social networking has gained popularity over the years, children and adults alike have been warned to be wary of the sort of information they allow to be posted for the world to see.

These kinds of warnings continue today and will continue to be given for as long as social networks are in use. This is because there are many inherent dangers to people who can easily fall victim to stalking and violence as a result of letting strangers know too much.

Social networkingThere are other things to be wary of when partaking in this type of networking though. While many have learned to be cautious about allowing predators to peer into their lives, it’s only more recently that people have even considered the possibility of people with less illicit intents taking advantage of the information and photographs that they post online.

Because those who use social networks do so in order to allow friends to follow their daily lives, they willingly post things that directly or indirectly allow their lives to be tracked.

This means their behaviors are documented online and somewhat loudly for friends to bear witness to. For the most part these behaviors are typical things that are harmless and, quite frankly, incredibly mundane.

Sometimes though the things that make their way to social networking websites involve information that can be construed as embarrassing or even damaging.

People have been quite willing to allow photographs that depict them in compromising scenarios to be posted, and often post them themselves, because it’s all in the name of fun and it’s all being shared with friends.

Unfortunately it’s not just friends who end up seeing these things some of the time. Whether it’s because the person’s online profile was intentionally made public or because an extended network of friends allows the information to wind up in an unintended place, these things have been causing waves in all sorts of previously never before thought of ways.

How Big Business Can Use Your Social Networking Profile To Gather Information About You

Forget the criminal element; people are finding that the business world, the mainstream media and the legal world are using their online personal profiles against them. What has been happening more and more is that people within these legitimate organizations have been accessing the profiles in order to assess others.

Business for instance have been using social networking profiles to research the type of lives potential employees live. They use the photographs that they can legally gain access to determine if the applicants fit the mold they require. For good or for bad, right or wrong, this is something that happens, even though much of the information passed around on these sites is widely open to contextual interpretation.

The News Services Have Also Moved To Social Networking

The media is also using these sites to investigate whoever has found themselves in the headlines. It’s an easy and efficient way to gather the kind of information that can make or break a person’s reputation especially if you are an affiliate if they happened to get involved with something newsworthy.

Even more damaging is the fact that lawyers use social networks in the same way. Recent years have seen many civil claims being destroyed because of information plaintiffs have willingly posted.

Stop And Think Before Posting Private Information On Social Networking Sites

What one should take from all of this is that there is more to be aware of when posting information on social networking sites than the potential criminal dangers. Online social networkers need to think first about what photos or information they post as one day it may come back to haunt them, so think twice  before posting anything to social networking sites.

Who would have thought that five years ago Facebook would be used for means of business? I remember starting college, when it was first becoming available to all of them across the country. As it’s a good tool, it’s still hard adjusting to the concept that everyone is watching, all the time- and expressing yourself on such sites can either har or hurt you.

      Hi Anne

Yes far to many people are becoming complacent with Facebook and broadcasting their lives across the internet, however as a business tool especially for some one like me and affiliate marketer it is a very powerful tool to have for making associates and even finding potential buyers for any products or services i might be promoting.
