What Is Gorilla Marketing

October 21, 2009 By Ron 10 Comments

The term Gorilla Marketing correctly called “Guerrilla Marketing” has been around ever since Conrad Levinson wrote it in a book back in 1984.

Guerilla Marketing

It simply involves promotional tactics in which guerrilla marketing specialists use eye-catching promotions with such things as advertisements and slogans to pull customers towards a certain product or service. Sounds a lot like other forms of online marketing right?

What’s This Marketing Based On?

Gorilla marketing or the actual term which is “Guerrilla Marketing” is based however on low-budget marketing which comprises a lot of imagination and creativity from the creators of the promotion. Simplicity, However, is the key point to this marketing tactic.

It is of course very different from the traditional marketing strategies that the world has known for the last several years. Guerrilla Marketing techniques which were first used by smaller organizations and businesses and are now used by several large companies and brands to appeal to their consumers in an attempt to encourage them to buy.

These tactics can take many different forms, from the usual posters and billboards to street art and graffiti.

With the many improvements in technology and with media, companies can now engage their consumers in a wholly new experience. It is essential therefore for businesses to be able to discover the needs of their buyers and efficaciously cater to these demands. Using such things as street giveaways were found to be an excellent way to attract more consumers. This is also known as doing market research just in a slightly different way.

What Is The Target Market?

Guerrilla Marketing is intended to capture the heart of the consumer this is why this form of marketing advertisements will appear in places where consumers will surely stop and watch plus the captions used will surely hit the heart. Here are just some of the reasons why people buy as you will notice it is mainly based on emotion and feeling not facts… There are 41 other reasons as well.

  1. To Make More Money Even Though It Will Never Buy Happiness
  2. To Become More Comfortable, Even If Only A Little More
  3. To Attract Praise And Recognition Because Virtually Everybody Loves That Attention
  4. To Maximize Their Enjoyment Of Life, Whether Business, Or Virtually Anything
  5. To Own Things Of Beauty And Prestige Because They Nourish The Soul
  6. To Stop Any Form Of Criticism Which Of Course Nobody Wants
  7. To Make Their Working Life Easier This Is A Constant Need To Many People
  8. To Speed Up Their Working Day Because People Realize That Time Is Precious
  9. To Keep Up With The Guy Next Door There Are Those Guys Next Door In Everybody’s Lives
  10. To Feel Totally Unique A Rare, But Valid Reason To Make A Purchase

More often than not you will see companies who use Guerilla Marketing Techniques. They use this form of marketing in their advertisements online and offline as well as such places as billboards with images that are totally unrelated to the service that they are intending to provide. This is in order to grab the focus of the prospective purchaser. The buyer would then be aware of the brand and curiosity may lead this prospective buyer to learn more about what goods and services the company sells.

Guerrilla Marketing Is Still Used Today

Guerrilla Marketing gets a person’s mind working as soon as they see the advertisements and are therefore used not only by businesses but even by various charitable organizations who are working on various campaigns all over the world, using this technique they are hoping to encourage donations and sometimes to merely make their voices heard depending on the cause they are pursing.

Attracting and promoting is just one aspect of the entire marketing campaign. Yes, it is an effective method and one that remains popular, but we cannot forget the importance of a complete link from marketing and sales to service. Far too often we work really well in one aspect of an entire strategy, pulling it all together takes a consultative effort and more planning than the eventual action. Including your Internet Marketing or SEO campaign with your traditional campaign and systems to ensure you are measuring the whole of your business effort is mandatory for absolute success.

      Hi Matt..

Yes you are right with that… many people online really do not understand this and it usually leads them to give up when in actual fact if they had just spent a little time looking at the big picture and tweaking there site or campaigns slightly they would have made a good living.

Please keep me informed of your teachings, I am on traffic exchanges, and social media, just learning at my speed but would love to step it up. Thanks.

    sincerely,

      Hi Sharon

Can I just say to you this, be vary wary of traffic exchanges as they can be associated with link farms which can be bad for your website. Social media is a good tactic and you should also be using article marketing as another excellent way to drive traffic to your site.

The best thing you can possible do that is affordable and practical is add new content to your sites every week if you can, that way you will be attracting more visitors through the search engines.

I read once a book about copywriting. This book emphasized the need of creating emotion while reading the copy. This very similar to the Gorilla marketing technique. It really works pretty well. People buy products not because the feature they offer but because the emotion that the copy transmits. Nevertheless, I believe Gorilla Marketing is even more complex and complete than just giving a simple emotion. This is about making people to feel comfortable. 🙂 These are just my thoughts.

      Hi Daniel…

Yes the key to copy-writing is creating emotion but jut not any emotion you need to write so as the reader must have the product which means that the emotion you want to generate in your copy is that of need where the product or service is going to help the reader solve a problem.

    Hey Ron

Thanks for clearing this up. I always thought that the term Gorilla Marketing just meant “agressive” marketing. Makes more sense now, it is when you market something using methods that are seemingly unrelated to the product but is memorable and stands out. I see plenty of car commercials like that.
