Big Business And Social Media

June 23, 2010 By Ron 8 Comments

Even though the economy is not as stable as it used to be, there are still a number of small businesses emerging that need to understand social media.

This is largely due to the fact that social media has a lot to do with how these businesses are marketed and promoted online today. Big business social media has a number of components, and if you’re aware of the steps that you can take to market your business, you can definitely move your company forward in a short amount of time.

Big Business Turns To Social Media Networking Sites

Social MediaIn order to make the most of big business social media and the benefits of social marketing, you should research all the social network websites that are available. What you will find is that some social network sites are for certain types of businesses, and some websites are for both personal and professional purposes.

If you are looking to let everyone in your social network know about your newly created business, it’s a good idea to set up a professional account on Facebook.

They are many businesses today opting for this rather than paying thousands of dollars having there own website built. This way, you will gather friends that are interested in the product that you’re selling, and you’ll be able to tell your friends from high school and college about your company, so that they can bring in more customers for you.

Is It Good Practice To Built Your Business On A Social Media Platform?

We however are not an advocate of this method as we believe that you need your online credibility to keep moving forward and you can only do this by also establishing your own presence with a website. Yes it is fine to have an effective Facebook page but you need to remember one thing when spending countless hours getting it to where you want it, “You Don’t Own It” and events or situations beyond your control can also bring your social media presence tumbling down.

You might consider reading this post on The Most Dangerous Threat To Your Marketing Efforts on the Copyblogger website. It is surfacing more and more about how business can lose control of their income by relying on third parties. So much so that it now has a name “Digital ShareCropping”.

How To Effectively Reach Different Demographics With Social Media

If you already own a large corporation and are trying to reach a different demographic, you should refer to big business social media websites like LinkedIn. You’ll have to provide a detailed description of your business, and can send friend requests to potential and existing clients.

Your Corporate Or Business Website Should Always Be a Blog To Use Social Media Effectively

Blogs have also become an important part of big business social media. When you have your own business blog, you’re able to explain principles of your company in detail, and you can use as much space as you want. You should also fill your blog with pictures of events that you’ve hosted at your company, or photos of your employees participating in community events.

This will make your business more reputable to any potential or existing clients. Don’t forget to include a comment page on your blog site as well, so that you can interact with your potential customers.

This way, customers can provide feedback about an item they have purchased from your business, or provide comments about the services that your staff has rendered. Make sure that you respond to comments as often as possible as well. This will show that you have a genuine interest in your customers, and this is sure to drum up more business for you.

Excellent advice as always. NEVER build your online presence primarily on a site you do not control. MANY have lost all their work because the site where they put it disappeared overnight. ALWAYS OWN most of your content and use other sites to drive traffic to YOUR site.

We also recommend that your new site should be a blog even if you are not prepared to start blogging yet. We build all sites on WordPress even when we don’t blog on them. See Golden Rule Gazebo’s Gazebo Manufacturer site. It is self-hosted WordPress using the Thesis Theme but since they are busy building gazebos and don’t know how to use the blog yet it is not visible.

Ideally businesses must devote the resources required to blog regularly, promote that content, and have someone qualified to answer questions in the comments and submitted through the blog. People do business with those who care about them and respond to them. That is the edge small businesses must capitalize on.

They also must use Social Networking productively and we are all just now developing best practices for that. I can not recommend highly enough that it takes an entire Team to do this well.

Ron and I and others like us are collaborating because it is essential. In earlier times you could learn one skill and then another in a sequential process. That no longer works because everything changes too fast. Your first skill will be obsolete before you learn the second and you may need four or five specialties to achieve success.

That is what we are doing: bringing together many of the very best in their areas of expertise and pooling our time and talents. There simply is no other way – we have all come to the same conclusion.

Soon we will be able to share what we know for the benefit of businesses that do not have time to do this themselves because they need to focus on running their business – not learning all the things that took us years to know.

    Hi Ron,

I’m glad to have stumbled upon your blog. Fairly new to this whole game but seeing some success recently, I’m been desperate to learn how to utilize social media as an affiliate marketer.
As my sites are mostly small-time affiliate sites designed to pass people onto buying a product, simply adding a Facebook “Like” or Google PlusOne icon will not to the trick, as they’re not pages designed to build community or foster discussion or interchange.
However, I see that while you still describe yourself primarily as an affiliate marketer, you also have your own website (the importance of which you mentioned above) and blog ABOUT affiliate marketing and SEO, presumably in addition to the many affiliate sites you manage.
While I realize this article is primarily about ‘big business’, I believe I can utilize more or less the same process for my own, currently small-time, online endeavors as an affiliate.

Thanks for the great article–always glad to learn from a pro!

I like Twitter the best for getting social media traffic. It’s so simple to understand. Get followers, and tweet things they might be interested in.

      Hi Rowan

Twitter is just one of the many social networks you need to be involved in today. It is all about social influence online now and you really need to be getting exposure in different social media properties now to stay ahead of the game.

This is only going to become more relevant as time goes by with all the major search engines and how your site is being perceived by all the social users on the internet.

“It is surfacing more and more about how business can lose control of their income by relying on third parties.” It also gives you the advantage of producing and shaping your own content…not trying to fit it into another platform’s user interface.
