Affiliate Marketing Pitfalls To Avoid When Choosing Affiliate Programs

December 18, 2009 By Ron 4 Comments

Affiliate marketing can be quite the lucrative online business for someone who wants to create a consistent profit and chooses the right affiliate programs.

In short, you have to promote the product, send customers to the affiliate’s website, and then you earn a commission from the sale. People are claiming they have collected millions from affiliate programs, but there are more who fail at affiliate marketing.

It’s crucial that you have a guide to affiliate marketing success which will help you avoid pitfalls from the beginning.

affiliate programs mistakesIf you are struggling with current affiliate marketing or you are just starting out in the online business world, these tips will help implement your affiliate marketing strategies.

Affiliate marketing can be tricky because everyone is doing it and all want a piece of the profit but if you stick with it, it will pay off for you in the long run.

Don’t Get Involved With Marketing Low Quality Or Scam Affiliate Programs

The quality of the products that you promote may lower the quality of your website authority if you already offer your own high-end products. Your online customers would be disappointed if they see that you are promoting something that is not quality and trust will be lost here.

A good tip here is to order the product yourself to find out if it’s something you want to back up with your business name.

Don’t Build A Website That Only Sells Without Providing Useful Information

When creating your websites to sell products make sure to avoid having a website that only promotes sale after sale. If you have a blog or a site, it’s great to have information for your visitors that they can use. Don’t just have a website filled with products that are all over the place and from different niches.

If you are personally going to be endorsing a product, have useful information for your customer on why they need to buy the product.

It’s an excellent idea to have purchased the product yourself so you can the real benefits and can honestly and openly tell your site visitors that truth about the product.

Don’t Deceive Your Site Visitors

Don’t sell products that you don’t know anything about. There are many online businesses promoting products they have no clue about. It’s a useful tactic if you begin with products you are familiar with because you can write a lot of information about them quickly and truthfully. This will earn the trust of your current and future customers.

Start Small With Your Promotion Of Affiliate Products

If you want to become successful with affiliate marketing, concentrate on only a few niche products for your website. There are so many affiliate programs available that it’s tempting to try them all, but you will lose your customer’s attention as well as becoming overwhelmed with to much work if you go outside of your niche business.

Stick with a few products in the beginning and once they are making a decent income for you start to expand into other niches.

Don’t Use Fake Testimonials Or Reviews That Are Not True

There are so many website owners who write up fake testimonials and reviews that you can see right through them. Don’t create lies to your customers. If you already have an online business, you can ruin your credibility. If you are just beginning your online business, it’s recommended that you build good credibility with your visitors for you may find it easier to sell the products you choose to endorse.

Stay Focused And Don’t Quit

Last but not least when it comes to affiliate programs, don’t quit too soon because the first thing you tried didn’t work out. A lot of affiliates who dive into affiliate marketing expect results within the first few days or at a minimum the first week.

Affiliate marketing takes time to grow, and the results do not happen overnight even though some would have you believe this, you need to choose suitable affiliate programs to see positive results.

I have been trying to make a go at affiliate marketing for years now. I have tried a lot of different things with no results and no sales. I totally agree with the quality of products you offer your customers. I have been following a lot of other marketers and the thing that sticks out the most is to offer your customer more in use value than what you take from them. With all of the various things to promote online it is very hard to choose a starting point. It is also hard to stay motivated and focused when you don’t get any result from your effort. Great post thank you for writing it.

      Hi Howard

I feel your pain and frustration so much so that when I first started out I also had the same problems. You need help and you need the right type of help to get started.

For me there was not much around so I was fortunate enough to come across a course created by a guy called Corey Rudl, he was the founder and president of the Internet marketing Center. This course was very expensive ($12,000) to do, but set me on the right path without all the hype and B.S.

Today however you have some very good and affordable options if you want to start your own business online. You will see that I said own business because that is what affiliate marketing really is a business. I already see that you have got yourself a blog so now you just need to understand the concepts of everything.

The best way for you or anyone else to get started is by joining the Income Blogging Guide and also getting Kristi Hines e-book The Ultimate Blog Post Promotion Guide both of these programs will get you going in the right direction to make something of your online efforts.

At the end of the day Howard you can keep trying to go it alone, or take the advice of people who are actually making money online and see results for your effort.

Just built up my websites product affiliate program, I have been getting a relative number of clicks on my advertiser’s products, however, what I am finding in today’s society especially with the recession and with a lot of small businesses closing every week is that most people prefer things for free.

With this being the case it makes me very wary about spending money on advertising costs, or on paid for directories, has I don’t think you would recover your costs, with society and the very competitive business of Internet marketing and selling it does make me wonder if I will make any money.

Not to worry in the long run the experience of designing and building my website and also the knowledge which I have gained through all of this was definitely worth the effort for me, however, I wouldn’t recommend this business to everyone, extremely difficult to make an honest living.
