The Facebook Pop Culture

Unless someone has been completely sheltered for the last several years, they will have heard of Facebook.

FacebookWith the continuously growing popularity of this social network it has made its way into pop culture. By name alone, the marketing of Facebook within movies, television shows, and everyday life is becoming more frequent and accepted.

Naturally each time Facebook is mentioned in one of these forms of media, there is further publicity and advertising done to help this already very popular site.

Facebook Goes To The Movies

With Hollywood making as many movies a year as it does, there are several released to hit the pop culture society and will more often than not mention Facebook in them.

Quite often these are light comedies, or romances. In light comedies or even parodies someone will either update their Facebook status with a humorous quote, or there will be a friend request from the fictitious killer.

With romantic movies there was originally the pull of meeting someone by email. Now you can find someone spying on their partner by using Facebook. There is never an explanation given as to what Facebook is in these movies. It is assumed that everyone watching already knows about this phenomenon.

As a rule, the writers are correct in their assumption as the concept of Facebook is never questioned by a patron of the movie.

The same rules seemingly apply to television shows. There have been shows discussing the slander of one of the main characters on Facebook. In fact, entire episodes have been dedicated to the topic of internet sites and the things that can happen with them.

Furthermore, there are shows on television that quite often will have a comment made regarding Facebook. “Oh, I need to update my Facebook status now!” can be heard regularly on one television show.

Facebook And It’s Pop Culture

It is not just movies and television that have references to Facebook. Regular pop culture society is also affected by this social website. Recently while dining out I was joking around with our waiter. Shortly after our joking session he returned to say that he had to post on Facebook something from our conversation.

This further proves the immediacy of Facebook and the pull it has on people. It does not just stop with that however.

People all over the world will take breaks in their day to check Facebook and update their status. Some people will just log in so they can see what their friends are doing. Either way, the pull created from this website is strong.

Why Facebook Continues To Grow

As Facebook becomes more mainstream in society not just to every day people but online marketers and even big business, there will be more and more references to it. Whether it is in movies or on television, people will continue to comment on the use of Facebook and of course the ever important “Status”.

Each time it is mentioned it has been marketed further and yet another person has learned of the powers of this social network. Even in general society people are feeling the pull to Facebook and the need to keep themselves connected to their friends.

When people say they are going to update their Facebook status in a public setting, you can bet they have an iphone, android phone or blackberry. Facebook wins in that regard as well, the fact that it is so easy to access allows for Facebook to be mentioned in conversation much more frequently rather than disregarding the thought of mentioning it because of the fact that one couldn’t update his/her status or share a pic using a smartphone.

      Hi Josiah

Yes I think you’re right the ease of use as well as easy access through third party devices has made Facebook very popular with the younger generations and even some businesses are now using it to promote events as well.
