Title Tags Crucial in Capturing Attention of Potential Visitors - Meta Description Tag Backs Up Title and Drives Home the Benefits of Visiting YOUR Site or Blog
You’re not going to believe this… there more than a handful of so called savvy marketers that don’t use meta name=”description” tags”. Why in the heck don’t these guys and gals use them you ask… Your guess is as good as mine.
I’m assuming since they’re aware that description tags aren’t “absolutely” necessary they make a conscious decision to leave them out of their raw code. In all honesty it’s completely up to YOU -although I must worn you that the description tag is a tool of leverage not just an analogous string of code that’s best left out completely.
You Must Ask Yourself…
- Where are my visitors coming from?
- How did they find me there?
- Is there any competition around causing my potential visitor to choose other sites?
- If answer is YES to the above scenario then how can YOU turn the tables in your favor?
Lets answer these questions and draw some light on the subject. I probably don’t need to tell you this although most your traffic will come from search engines. Specifically… natural search areas usually found on Left hand side of search results.
It’s in these SERP’s you’ll witness the PULLING POWER of well written title tags and description tags. I guess it would be best if we dove into the way Google finds sites and ranks them.
First thing Google does when a search query is brought to its front door is go get Google-bot, it’s main work horse. Google-bot spiders the site systematically. First scanning the title tags looking for its keyword query then it looks for the keyword in content of site. Once it locates words associated in search query… it uses them as a reference to let itself know that this page is directly related to your query as it’s found the words in a grammatically correct manner within the copy of your site.
Notice I said nothing about meta description tags. This is because Google will find and spider your site and even list you in the SERP’s without the description tag.
The only problem with this is overlooking purpose of the description tag. This tag allows you as a webmaster to craft a custom description of the pages appearing in the SERP’s. It’s kinda like a little sales pitch or classified ad that said “HEY LOOK at ME I’m down HERE- CLICK ME!”
Now — if you where to leave out description tag… as is your wright… you would be leaving it up to random fate that Google is going to display the right combination of persuasive copy that will real in the clicks!
You know what! ……… More times than not Google will display a “jumbling” of words and phrases that it cannibalizes and pieces together from your body copy. The end result of this cannibalization and reconstruction of words is far less likely to be compelling enough to attract quality click throughs or leads.
The meta name=”description”tag” allows YOU to custom write compelling copy that will draw attention to your listing in the SERP’s. You want to let people know that your site is the one they want to visit out of the other 10 results on page. There’s a handful of special tactics you can use to make this happen… all of which we will highlight.
But…Before we skip off to the special tactics highlight you should know that not having a title tag is the equivalent of committing SEO suicide. Search death would be inevitable without a title tag so make sure you have these tags in the code of all your blogs, blog post, and pages on your static sites.
Make sure your keywords are in the <title>tag</title> as Google will scan this tag first! I suggest you go as far as studying the art of crafting classified ads.
Yep - Classified ads!
Why? … you ask… Well because that’s essentially what title tags are, tiny little classified ads that the search engines find and post once your site has been identified as a top choice. You get enough top choices and you stand a chance at becoming “Top Dawg”!!!! – notice I didn’t say it was “guaranteed” to happen!
You see just because you made it to the top of the SERP’s for your respective phrases and words, doesn’t guarantee the masses will flock to your site… and your site only. You must give them good incentive to visit your site.
That’s where well crafted classified ads come in. You see a typical classified newspaper add has the same purpose that title tags do on the Net. They are used to categorize business opportunities, services and products. The better the ad the more likely you are to call the number or respond to the listing….YES?
Well that’s the same way title listings are in the SERP’s, so it’s safe to say the same things that cause people to respond to classified ads in the newspapers will work in the search engines.
Remember you also have the option of furthering the chances of pulling in visitors by custom writing your own meta description tags to assure you have quality compelling copy in plane sight that outlines and drives home the benefits of clicking your link to view your thoughts in regards to their query.
